![]() ![]() As crowds record her struggle, she soon finds that the scenario is nothing like she could have imagined. “White Bear” feels the more like a traditional horror film than any other episode of Black Mirror, as an amnesiac woman (Lenora Crichlow) is being chased by gun-toting “hunters.” With no memory of how she found herself here or why she is being pursued, she tries to piece enough information together in order to survive. Not much sets this episode apart from different (yet similarly grating) Black Mirror episodes other than the featured star. ![]() Unfortunately, the episode fails to connect, given that the premise is already well-treaded within this series, with a protagonist’s soul leaving their body, only to find a new host within an Alexa-like virtual home assistant/friend who’s under the care of a teenage fan. That’s perhaps the most interesting aspect of this episode, which rests largely upon the gimmick of casting Cyrus and assuming that all the other pieces will slide into place. Miley Cyrus self-referentially plays a glossy pop star who’s not unlike Hannah Montana but one who at times covers Nine Inch Nail tunes. “Men Against Fire” has a lot to say about the extent of power given to the government and how that can corrupt, but unfortunately the ugly metaphor doesn’t quite land. After his government-issued interface ends up damaged, he starts to see the roaches for what they really are, rather than how the higher-ups want them to be seen. As Stripe (Malachi Kirby) hunts down these roaches, an attack leaves him with a different view on the situation. In this look at military life and the political agendas behind it, soldiers are hunting down and eliminating “roaches,” mutated human beings that are seemingly a danger to society. ![]() Lawther and Flynn are both good, but the episode will make you feel like you require a Silkwood shower and is not for the faint of heart. He’s helped by another blackmailed man (Jerome Flynn) and things get increasingly bleak as the episode builds towards a devasting conclusion. When a seemingly kind young man (Alex Lawther) accidentally downloads a program that records his every move through his laptop camera, he is blackmailed into a series of increasingly dangerous actions or a video of him masturbating to internet pornography will be released. Sometimes Black Mirror leans a little too hard into nihilism, and “Shut Up And Dance” is the clearest example of that tendency. Black Mirror uses memory access to the detriment of its characters to greater effect in “The Entire History Of You,” so while “Crocodile” amps up the stakes, the emotional payoff just isn’t there. Despite Riseborough, “Crocodile” still falls a bit flat. Playing the increasingly desperate Mia, you can feel her start to fray as her perfectly constructed life (she is a celebrated architect, after all) is threatened by a dark secret from her past and a new sin in the present. NetflixĪndrea Riseborough has been on the cusp of stardom for a while, and this episode is proof of why. Government is a serious business that shouldn’t be controlled merely by the loudest voices, but Waldo is probably not the best mouthpiece for that truth. Despite these heavy themes, “The Waldo Moment” doesn’t have that much to say. Waldo was once a tool to poke fun of the stuffy political class, but that doesn’t mean that he is a better alternative in the long run. When a failed comedian (Daniel Rigby) and his cartoon character, Waldo, get roped into an election, the lines between entertainment and politics get uncomfortably blurred. While it feels surprisingly prescient following the 2016 election, “The Waldo Moment” just doesn’t have the cleverness to put it in the top ranks of Black Mirror. The danger that sets off the mother’s choices feels relatively low stakes compared to the horror in other episodes, making the violent end both expected and unearned. ![]() When new technology allows a mother (DeWitt) to censor what her daughter sees and also tracks her every move, things go expectedly awry. Unfortunately, the story beats are all too familiar, proving that sometimes you can see a Black Mirror twist coming. Directed by Jodie Foster and starring Rosemarie DeWitt, the expectations for “Arkangel” were rather high. ![]() ![]() ![]() Previous research has raised concern regarding a weakened correlation between ENSO and the Indian summer monsoon 17. ENSO’s impacts can be complicated by other large scale weather phenomenon such as the Indian Oceanic Dipole (IOD) 14, North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) 15 and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) 16. In addition, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) holds significant influence on weather patterns, temperature anomalies, precipitation regimes, and atmospheric circulation patterns 10, 11, 12, 13. This rainband initiates the continental Indian rainy season, the Chinese Mei-yu and the Japanese Baiu in June and matures over July and August, making June–August important months for studying the large-scale precipitation 9. Initially, the monsoon begins with rainfall surges in the South China Sea in May which extends to the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Monsoon plays a crucial role that can impact both spatial and temporal variations of precipitation, as described previously 9. The meteorological factors influencing precipitation patterns in the Asia–Pacific region (APR) are exceedingly intricate, characterized by interdependencies among them. Large scale climate phenomenon can influence precipitation patterns across the globe and influence burden of food and waterborne diseases, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) 5, 6, 7, 8. With drier land surfaces and increased precipitation, the land becomes prone to both droughts and floods 2, 3, 4. Higher air temperature and evaporation rate lead to greater accumulation of water vapor in the air, resulting in increased storms, more intense precipitation as well as land surface drying due to prolonged drying periods 2. Ongoing climate change is impacting regional precipitation pattern across the globe 1. These findings revealing patterns and drivers for extreme precipitation in APR may inform climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction strategies in the study region. During ENSO positive phase, significant negative anomalies in seasonal precipitation indices (amount of wet-day precipitation, number of wet days and intensity of wet-day precipitation) were observed in Indonesia, while opposite results were observed for ENSO negative phase. Locations in Malaysia and Indonesia are mostly dominated by precipitation intensity in March–May (MAM) and DJF. We observed that the seasonal variability of the amount of wet-day precipitation in most locations in China and India are dominated by precipitation intensity in June–August (JJA), and by precipitation frequency in December–February (DJF). Results revealed a general decrease indicated by the extreme precipitation indices (e.g., the annual total amount of wet-day precipitation, average intensity of wet-day precipitation), particularly in central-eastern China, Bangladesh, eastern India, Peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia. The analysis covered 465 ERA5 (the fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) study locations over eight countries and regions during 1990–2019. We further investigated how these extreme precipitation indices are influenced by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) at a seasonal scale. In this study, we analyzed extreme precipitation spatiotemporal trends in APR using 11 different indices and revealed the dominant factors governing precipitation amount by attributing its variability to precipitation frequency and intensity. In the Asia–Pacific region (APR), extreme precipitation is one of the most critical climate stressors, affecting 60% of the population and adding pressure to governance, economic, environmental, and public health challenges. ![]() ![]() Copy the Soundcloud song or playlist URL.Once you've found the song or playlist that you want to download. How to download SoundCloud Songs to your device? Check out Din here, and continue on for more groundbreaking sounds from South London. With Din out now, Tiberius b took the time to share the spotlight with a handful of their South London peers, compiling a playlist of some of their favorite tracks by artists within the scene. Mining the darkened electronics of Massive Attack and Portishead with the help of an A-list production team featuring Andrew Sarlo, Yves Rothman, and Vampire Weekend’s Chris Baio, the EP bounces around various additional outside influences (Tiberius is nearly rapping across lead single “Jetski”), the exposure afforded by Tiberius’ label Zelig Music (founded and operated by Mark Ronson) shining a light on an otherwise globally overlooked pocket of fascinating sounds germinating in South London. Since that performance, Tiberius b has rolled around in pigeon poop and presented listeners with Din, another EP which maintains Stains’s focus on innovative sound design while applying it to a more pop-focused goal. And while, yeah, that technically makes them a prominent musical figure within that Welsh village’s population of roughly 500 individuals, Tiberius is more frequently tied to a burgeoning experimental pop scene continually gathering steam in South London. When we last connected with Tiberius b they were camped out in the woods behind their grandmother’s house in Dolwyddelan, Wales, to play an impassioned, stripped-down live version of the title track from their 2021 EP Stains for our “Neighborhoods” performance series. ![]() ![]() ![]() Who will go first? If you haven’t already, make sure your strap is connected to the goggle frames. I used a teeny bit of hot glue to adhere the irises. Lay a straight edge along your eyeball where you want the eyelid to fall, then hot-glue that sucker down. Ok now, run and grab your yellow sheet of fun foam. Creepy, huh? I also outlined the irises with a black Sharpie, which makes them look more realistic. They print out, in pairs, on a sheet of paper, then all you need to do is pick the color you like, enlarge them to the appropriate size, and cut them out. So I still haven’t glued in the balls yet (a little juvenile humor for ya there) but next step would be to get some irises for your balls (heh heh).īelieve it or not, there’s a link for a multitude of irises. Who needs a manicure? I do! Check this out.Īlrightie then. After cutting, I then sanded the cut edge a bit, to remove any jaggy edges. Then I fired up my handy Dremmel and cut it along the line. Then I took one of my goggle “lenses” and marked off how much of the orb I needed for my eyeballs. I started by popping out the battery compartment and light, so that I had a hollow globe. I honestly am not sure what their original purpose was, but they were battery powered and glowed in my choice of red, green or blue. Anyway, I went looking for anything similar at Walmart and found these orbs in the pool section, on clearance. Which is what I recommend you do if you live in a cold weather climate that doesn’t stock whiffle balls year-round. If I wasn’t such an impatient gal, I would have gone online and ordered them through EBay. Ones like this…īut alas, there were none to be had in late September at Walmart. I went in search of 2 whiffle balls, the kind that are white with half the orb all “holey” and half of it plain. I also had a buckle from the same backpack strap, so I threaded the straps through that to make the goggles adjustable. I used a black nylon strap that I stole from my kid’s old backpack, but you can buy it by the yard at JoAnn’s. It looks like I forgot to photograph the slots before I threaded the strap through them, but this is what they looked like after I strapped them up. Cut one slot, about an inch wide on each ring, directly opposite the grommet. I did this with my trusty grommeting tool, but I could have used my Dremmel if it had occurred to me, and I’m sure the holes would’ve been prettier. Ok, next step is to make a way to attach the straps. What more could I ask? They’re starting to look like goggles now, huh? Not the neatest job, but they are secured enough for my 8 year old. The end result is two rings attached like so… So now, I grommeted the two rings together, using a silver grommet. These don’t have to be perfect, just big enough to slip a small grommet through. I next popped a hole through the side of each lid, using my grommeting tool, which I will also need for the step after this. The jars, with lids confiscated, will now make pretty vases for some cut flowers. To do this, I started with two Mason jar lids, with the inner circles removed.
